Revision Material -- Year 9

Revision Material -- Years 10-11

Revision Material -- Years 12-13

On entry to the school in year 7, students are taught in their mixed ability tutor sets. In Year 8, students are streamed by ability based on thorough assessments and student setting continues to be reviewed each term during Key Stage 3. Top set students have a specially enhanced programme designed to make strong academic demands on them and to further their interest and enthusiasm for the subject. Investigative and exploratory work is encouraged in the learning of Mathematics together with a strong emphasis on the essential algebraic, numeric and geometric skills.

In any year, a mixture of learning activities is used, including teacher led discussions and tasks, small group investigations, use of ICT, practical projects and text book practice. To assist in our teaching, we now have interactive whiteboard or projector installed in each of the 5 maths classrooms. Our aim is to make mathematics as accessible and enjoyable as possible for all our students through the use of a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.

Latest News

On 12th November, Year 10 took their first Modular examination towards their GCSE. The Module 3 examination accounts for 27% of their GCSE grade! The results should be in school during January, these will be reported back to pupils as soon as we have them. Congratulations in advance for their expected good results!

Year 10 will now start their Module 1 work, which will be examined next March. This will count for 18% of their GCSE examination.

Y11 have just handed in their Module 4 coursework. We are anticipating excellent results on this based upon the observations of pupils work and discussions staff have had with pupils regarding what they need to do next, to improve further. If any pupil still has not handed in their work, then they must see Mr Pipe immediately!

Y11 mock exams occur next January, please ensure that your child is revising for these important exams. The best way of preparing themselves is to practice. Past papers are available online at www.aqa.org.uk, choose qualifications, then GCSE (from the drop down choice), then Mathematics B (Modular) 3302, then Assessment material at the top of the page. They will be sitting a Module 5 type paper and they should know which tier is appropriate for them. Although pupils will be doing the 4302 B course, this is new, so there are no previous papers for them to do here, yet!

Y9 will shortly be doing a practice SATs, as an early introduction to the style and standard of questions that they will face. Mr Pipe’s group will also be doing a practice paper set by the EdExcel examination board, as an aid to them in setting the SATs questions. This should prove invaluable to our pupils, both in experience and the feedback that we shall receive for them.

The department has in stock, CASIO FX85ES scientific calculators, at the bargain cost of only £6, available from Mr Pipe. Other mathematical equipment can be purchased from their mathematics teacher.

Mr Pipe has a limited number of revision guides, both for KS3 and GCSE. Pupils who wish to buy these need to see him quickly.
