English

Welcome to the English Department.

We work hard to develop your child’s skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as encouraging positive motivation in our students.

At KS3 we are implementing the National Literacy Strategy and planning to its key objectives. We have extra timetabled lessons for some students to enable a catch up programme to be taught within the school day.

At KS4 we run a joint English and Literature course resulting in two GCSE’s

Students new to King’s will follow a Transition Unit for the first two or three weeks designed to support the learning they have completed in Year 6.

Their lessons will follow the pattern of Literacy Hour lessons involving several activities which teach key objectives.

They will need a regular reading book and a dictionary as part of their studies.

There is often extra support in the classroom targeted at Year 7 students.

KS3- In years 7-9

In Years 7 - 9 students have between 3 and 5 lessons per week according to the need for catch up lessons. These involve short intensive bursts on the skills necessary to improve literacy:-spelling, reading between the lines, writing organisation and paragraphing.

All students follow a balanced course in English which follows the National Literacy Framework of Objectives and the National Curriculum.

In Year 9 they study a play by Shakespeare and are prepared for their SATS tests.

KS4 GCSE

Students in Years 10 and 11 have four lessons of English per week.

A new syllabus is in operation, but the requirements to study poetry, prose and drama remain the same.

A majority of students are entered for two examinations at the end of the course of study:

English and English Literature.

KS5

There are opportunities for students to take AS and A2 level English Literature at The King’s School and currently an AS group is running.
