Mathematics

The philosophy of the team is that young people achieve a lasting understanding of Mathematics when they are actively committed to their studies.

Our aim is that pupils at The King’s find the study of Maths both demanding and enjoyable.

Courses covered

Yr. 7-9 KS3
Yrs 10-11 KS4
Yr 12 AS Mathematics
Yr 13 A2 Mathematics

KS3-Yrs 7-9
In Years 7-9 there are a minimum of 3 lessons per week.

1-2 extra lessons per week are allocated to lower sets for extended teaching.

Each years’ work contains units of

NUMBER
ALGEBRA
SHAPE AND SPACE
DATA HANDLING

Students also engage in investigation work

At the end of Year 9, students are entered for the Key Stage 3 examination at an appropriate level.

KS4 GCSE
In Years 10 and 11 there are 3 lessons per week.

Students follow a course leading, at the end of Year 11, to GCSE FOUNDATION, INTERMEDIATE or HIGHER TIER.

The Key Stage 4 exam consists of 5 modules
Module 1—written papers 11%
Module 2—coursework (data handling)10%
Module 3—written papers 19%
Module 4-coursework (investigation) 10%
Module 5-written paper (final exam) 50%

Post-16

Yr 12 AS Mathematics
(Pure Maths & Statistics)
Yr 13 A2 Mathematics
(Pure Maths & Mechanics)

Lessons follow a 3-part format with which students are familiar from their primary school ie:

A MENTAL/ORAL STARTER
THE MAIN LESSON
A PLENARY SESSION

All students need:
a pen
pencil
ruler
sharpener
eraser
Scientific calculator
protractor and
a pair of compasses

These should be brought to each lesson.
