Modern Foreign Languages

WELCOME
WILLKOMMEN
BIENVENUE

We aim to make language learning an enjoyable and successful experience for our pupils. We help pupils to develop effective communication skills and encourage them to respect different cultures.

We hope that they will learn that though people may speak and live differently they often share the same values and interests.

FACILITIES

The MFL department is based in newly furnished classrooms and is well equipped with cassette recorders, listening equipment, televisions, video recorders, DVD Players and OHP.

The MFL block is now completed and the Language faculty is located in purpose-built rooms with an ICT and role play area. Our Language Laboratory is now complete too.

Year 7

We will inform you of which language your child will be studying when they attend induction day.

No specific equipment is necessary but we would recommend students have a dictionary for the course of KS3 and this can be purchased from the Learning Resource Centre.

From time to time we offer students the opportunity to buy specially produced magazines and revision guides to extend and enhance their language learning.

There will also be opportunities during KS3 & 4 to go on foreign visits and language related visits such as GCSE workshops.

Courses

KS3

In years 7 - 9 all pupils study either French and German for two lessons per week. The most able pupils will have the opportunity to study both languages.

Pupils develop their speaking skills through pair work, role play and drama.

Year 7 -pupils learn to talk about themselves, their home, school and hobbies.

Year 8 - pupils learn to cope with eating out and asking the way and similar situations.

Year 9 - pupils learn to express opinions on films, fashion, music and develop Year 7 & 8 topics further.

KS4

Pupils presently choose one language from French, German, Panjabi or Urdu.

All students are encouraged to study a language and we offer alternatives to GCSE where necessary.

Pupils will be assessed in the four skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each skill makes up 25% of the final GCSE grade. Instead of a written paper students are expected to complete two pieces of coursework in Year 11.
Post-16

We currently run AS and A2 Panjabi. We are keen to encourage students to study French and German Post-16, in conjunction with our partner schools. We currently have students taking AS French and had A2 German completed last year.
