The King’s School is an oversubscribed Church of England School situated in most pleasant grounds in Tettenhall. It is a happy school where students with a wide ability range and representing the diverse cultural communities within Wolverhampton strive to achieve their full potential. Our recent OfSTED inspection judged us to be outstanding in several key aspects.

Governors wish to appoint an excellent classroom practitioner with whole school leadership responsibilities to lead, develop and promote excellence in learning and teaching in our Mathematics Department.

A word from John Allin - Principal

Dear colleague,

Thank you for showing interest in our school and I hope this information encourages you to apply for the post of Assistant Principal.

All schools probably claim to be special. I have been here for just over a year and I spotted a school that was that bit different with amazing potential. We are a church school in a multi cultural, multi faith setting. This provides the richest and most fascinating context. We are also a specialist visual arts school with the addition of sports with science.  The students are our greatest asset. They are a smashing bunch and we are determined to give them the very best.

These are definitely exciting times for us. OFSTED has just visited and we are delighted with the report:-

“High expectations, ambition, unity and harmony characterise this multi-cultural, multi-faith, Church of England school and provide a firm foundation on which it has built some outstanding features- including the extent to which students contribute to the school and the wider community, their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and the effectiveness with which the school promotes community cohesion.”

We are not complacent and the report notes our capacity for sustained improvement. In recent years the students’ results have given us much to celebrate. In 2009, over 70% of the Year 11 cohort gained at least 5 A*-C grades. This post, however, recognises our determination to maximise the potential of our students. Mathematics is a popular subject and a priority for us is to make sure that all students succeed. Our ‘A’ level groups are a healthy size and you may or may not wish to teach this aspect of the curriculum. The department is fully staffed. Currently all members of the department have their own, well resourced room and there are exciting developments ahead.

We are the first school in Wolverhampton to benefit from the Building Schools for the Future scheme. We are thrilled with the designs and building work which will commence later in the year. This will have a real impact on our curriculum design and delivery. This is a really exciting point and our new colleague will have an important part to play. The mathematics department is set to become part of our Practical Zone; an opportunity for teachers to work closely with colleagues from science, design and physical education. Things are not set in stone and we are looking forward to sharing ideas with someone else.

As a school we take professional development extremely seriously. The job description, of course, outlines what the post is about but negotiation is vital when deciding what certain responsibilities should be. Clearly we are looking for someone who is excited by mathematics and the prospect of moving things forward while also relishing the thought of getting stuck in to whole school issues. We’re in it together is a phrase I probably use far too often but it sums up what this post is about. Your career history and experience is very relevant but potential and looking to the future is the key. Your training needs will be a priority.

I really hope you will decide to apply. Please fill in the standard application form. It would be good if your letter of no more than two sides of A4 addressed the following:

. Information about why the learning and teaching of mathematics is exciting and vital.

. A short summary of the latest developments in pedagogy.

. Your priorities for moving things forward at The King’s School.

. Any thoughts about your particular interests and development needs as an assistant principal.

It is hard to know how much information to include. I hope we have given you enough of a flavour. Please do not hesitate to get in touch. I would be delighted to talk to you on the ‘phone to persuade, answer questions or put you at ease. We also like to show people around and this can easily be arranged.

The school is in Tettenhall which is a very attractive village on the outskirts of Wolverhampton. We are a couple of miles away from the Shropshire and Staffordshire countryside and colleagues come to us from all directions. Our students come from all over the city. There are currently around 900 of them on roll.

If you do apply you would be a step nearer to working within what is hopefully a friendly and supportive senior leadership team. We are open to ideas and looking forward to working with someone else.
