Dewey Decimal Classification
The Learning Resource Centre uses Dewey Decimal Classification to arrange non-fiction books. These are the numbers that appear on the spines of the books. They are part of a system for sorting things into subject groups. Dewey Decimal Classification is used in most libraries around the world!
There are two main types of books in the LRC, fiction and non-fiction.
Fiction books are about events that have not really happened. Examples of fiction books include; Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Tracey Beaker etc...
Non-Fiction books are full of factual information. Examples of non-fiction books include; atlases, dictionaries, revision guides etc...
The main classes of Dewey are as follows...
000 - 99 - Here you will find encyclopedias and books about general knowledge.
100-199 - Here you will find information about philosophy and psychology.
200 - 299 - This is where you will find books about religions and beliefs.
300 - 399 - This is where you will find information about laws, transport, myths & legends and fashion.
400 - 499 - In this section you will find books about languages.
500 - 599 - Here you will find information about maths, astronomy, sciences and animals.
600 - 699 - This is where you will find information about technology, health and medicine as well as pets and cooking.
700 - 799 - The books in this section are about sports and leisure, also included are books about dance and art.
800 - 899 - Here you will find information about literature, poetry and plays.
900 - 999 - This is where you will find information about geography, history and famous people.
There are subject indexes to help you find books on the counter in the LRC.
