Admissions Criteria

The King’s School Governors

POLICY TO BE FOLLOWED ON DECIDING ADMISSIONS
The King’s School, Tettenhall is a Voluntary Aided Church of England comprehensive school, to which the Governors admit children and families from all faiths and backgrounds and those of no faith, without reference to ability or aptitude.

Making application to The King’s CE School means applying for a place at a Church of England School which offers a distinctive Church of England character and ethos. The school has specialisms in Visual Arts and Sports with Science
 
There are no fees or charges related to the admission to the school and contributions to school funds or to off-site visits are not mandatory.

The governors will offer 150 places, each academic year, for entry into Year 7. In the event of oversubscription, places will be offered in accordance with the following categories detailed below.

Admissions Criteria

  1. To fully meet the criteria, applicants for a place under Category A, B, C or D must show in Question 5 on the Supporting Evidence Form, the family commitment to their place of worship. The school is based upon the teachings of The Church of England and participation in the worshipping life of the school is expected.
  2. Applicants must indicate on the Supporting Evidence Form, the category/categories under which they wish to be considered. In cases where no indication is made, the Governors will consider the application under the category/categories most appropriate, based on the evidence offered.      
  3. In accordance with the ‘School Admissions; Code of Practice’ issued in February 2007, governors will offer places to children in receipt of a Statement of Special Educational Needs, where The King’s School is named in the schedule. This will reduce the number of places available to non-statemented children.

If more than 150 applications are received, places will be allocated in accordance with the following categories.

CATEGORY A  - Foundation Places

Up to 35 places will be offered to children of practising Church of England families.
35 places will be offered to children whose families are worshippers in an Anglican Church. Written evidence of the family’s commitment to its place of worship in the form of a Personal Letter and Clergy reference will be required at the time of application.

CATEGORY B - Governors’ Places

Up to 20 places will be offered to children of practising Christian families of a denomination other than Church of England
20 places will be offered to children whose families are members of other Christian churches. Written evidence of the family’s commitment to its place of worship in the form of a Personal Letter and Clergy reference will be required at the time of application.

CATEGORY C - Faith Community Places

Up to 10 places will be offered to children of families who are actively involved in the worshipping life and work of any recognised faith community.
10 places will be offered to children whose families are other faith communities. Written evidence of the family’s commitment to its place of worship in the form of a Personal Letter and Clergy reference will be required at the time of application. 

CATEGORY D - Pastoral Places

Up to 5 places will be offered to families of children whose families must provide evidence at the time the application is made, of particular educational, social or medical needs which can be met especially well within the caring Christian environment of The King’s School. Families must already be in receipt of support from the Church of England or other recognised appropriate faith community in meeting these needs.

Oversubscription Clauses – Categories A, B, C, and D
For each category above, if there are more applications, which fully meet each criterion, than there are places available, then places will be allocated according to the following oversubscription criteria. These are stated in order of priority. See Glossary of Terms for explanations and definitions.

  1. Looked After Children. This must be confirmed at the time the application is made.

Children who have a sibling attending the school at the time of application and who joined the school before Sixth Form level.

  1. The strength of the family’s commitment to their place of worship as measured by the number of years, frequency of attendance and the involvement in activities associated with that place of worship.
  2. Children currently attending a Church of England School.
  3. The nearness of the home to the school. The distance is measured in a straight line from the child’s usual place of residence to the school’s nearest boundary.

CATEGORY E - Parish Residential Places

Up to 80 will be offered, in the proportions as indicated below, to children of families of any faith or none, whose usual place of residence, defined as being the family home at which the child resides regularly on weekdays, is within one of following parishes:-

  1. Tettenhall Regis/Tettenhall Wood/Perton        .. up to 40 places
  2. St Andrew, Wolverhampton                             .. up to 25 places
  3. St Jude, Wolverhampton                                 .. up to 15 places

The Supporting Evidence Form must be signed by the appropriate vicar/rector to confirm residence within the declared Parish Boundary. See Part Four, Question 6a on the Supporting Evidence Form.

In the case of oversubscription in any of the sub-criteria 1) to 3), places will be allocated to families on the basis of the following order of priorities, considering each sub-criterion individually, to children who, living within the declared parish boundary:

  1. are designated  Looked After Children.
  2. have a sibling attending the school at the time of application and who joined the school before Sixth Form level.
  3. have specific pastoral, medical/social reasons, fully identified to the Governors by the family and/or its supporters at the time the application is made, which can be met particularly well within the environment of The King’s School,
  4. attend a Church of England School within the relevant parish.
  5. reside closest to the school. The distance is measured in a straight line from the child’s usual place of residence to the school’s nearest boundary.

CATEGORY F-  Other Places

In the event of under subscription for any of the individual Categories A to E above, Governors will reconsider all other applications not allotted a place during the initial allocation.

 

In the case of oversubscription, places will be allocated to children of families who reside closest to the school, measured in a straight line from the child’s usual place of residence to the school’s nearest boundary.

Glossary of Terms

Recognised Faith Community. A ‘recognised faith community’ is one that is in membership with Churches Together in Wolverhampton, Churches Together In England, the Wolverhampton Evangelical Federation or Wolverhampton Inter Faith Council or equivalent for their local area.

Parish and Declared Parish Boundary. Each Church of England Church has a designated area known as a ‘parish’ and the person in charge, known as the Vicar or Rector ‘looks after’ those families living within that parish. The ‘declared parish boundary’ is the border of the parish as defined by the Diocese of Lichfield. 

 

Looked After Children.   A looked after child is a child who is looked after by the local authority as defined in Section 22 of the Children’s Act 1989. Evidence, e.g. evidence from the Placement Authority, must be provided with the Supporting Evidence Form.

Strength of Commitment.  Strength of Commitment is measured by the following priorities;-

  1. The number of years the family has been worshipping at their place of worship
  2. The frequency of worship
  3. Involvement in the activities associated with the place of worship

Family. The ‘family’ means the family unit as presented to the Governors in the Supporting Evidence Form.

Sibling.  For admissions purposes, a ‘sibling’ is a child who resided at the same address as the child for whom a place is being sought and is one of the following

  1. Brother/sister
  2. Halfbrother/sister i.e. share one parent
  3. Stepbrother/sister i.e. related by marriage
  4. Any child for whom it can be demonstrated that s/he is residing permanently at the same address [e.g. under the terms of a residence order]

Governors recognise that other family circumstances may exist and they will give consideration to other children/family groups as declared on the Supporting Evidence Form.


Multiple Births.   In the event that there is an insufficient number of places to allocate to twins, triplets etc., a decision will be made as to which child[ren] the place[s] is/are to be allocated. In this situation a places or places will be allocated to the first born [older child] and, in cases where this is not known, the allocation will be decided by lot.
