Dance

Are you prepared to perform in front of an audience? Committed to extra rehearsal? Enjoy practical Dance and Dance theory?

During this course you will have the opportunity to:

Focus largely on practical work with 80% of the total marks for performance and choreography. You will also complete a one hour written examination paper.

You will:

  • Learn dance styles and techniques (please be this course is not a street dance course)
  • Create dances of your own
  • Perform dances taught to you and those you have created
  • Watch professional dance performances and then use these to inspire and inform, both your practical and written dance work for assessment
  • It is important that you are aware that like all GCSE examination subjects there is a written element to the course.

You will study the following topics:

  • Technical and expressive dance skills
  • Compositional techniques and styles
  • Performance and stage craft
  • Dance history
  • Dance Appreciation

During the course you will complete assignments related to the following four units:

Unit 1: Critical Appreciation of Dance (50 marks – 20%) You will study a selection of Dance works and answer questions on two of these during the written examination. The written paper focuses on critical analysis and understanding of two professional works selected by the teacher.

Unit 2: Set Dance (30 marks – 20%)
Practical Examination - Solo Performance – 1–1½ minutes
Perform the set study specified by the examination board

Unit 3: Performance in a duo/group dance (30 marks – 20%)
Controlled Assessment - Performance in a duo/group - 3 – 3½ minutes

Unit 4: Choreography (Unit total: 60 marks – 40%)
Task 1: Solo Composition 1–1½ mins (20 marks – 15%)
Task 2: Choreography – solo/duo/group (40 marks – 25%)
