GCSE ENGLISH LITERATURE


During this course you will have the opportunity to:

Read and understand a variety of writing in English.

During the course you will study the following topics:

  • A play by William Shakespeare
  • A pre-1914 novel
  • A range of modern and pre-1914 poetry.
  • A 20th Century drama
  • Other texts prescribed for use in English.

The course is taught as an integrated part of English lessons but it is a separate course leading to a separate qualification.

During the course you will be expected to complete the following coursework assignments – two of which also contribute to the English Language GCSE.

  • Drama published before 1914 (Shakespeare) – crossover with English Language
  • Prose published before 1914 – crossover with English Language
  • 20th Century drama

These will all contribute to your final examination grade. In addition you will be expected to complete homework relevant to your course of study on a weekly basis. Your homework will help you to build up knowledge and techniques essential for successful examination performance.

Coursework: number of pieces 3 30% of final mark
Final examination: number of exams 1 70% of final mark
