Exam Board: AQA History B Modern World

What is the course about?

The Modern World Course covers the major political events that have influenced world History in the last 100 years. This will include topics such as World War One and its effects on the major countries of Europe in 1919 and the Causes of World War Two. The course will also focus on Cold war topics including the Berlin Blockade and the Vietnam conflict.History

There will be an in-depth study of the history of America between 1918 and 1945. This will focus on areas such as immigration, prohibition, gangsters, jazz music and the development of the cinema.

What skills will I develop?History
As well as studying a fascinating period, students will develop their use of historical sources, by extracting information from them and using them in a critical way. To be successful you will need to research information independently and also use this knowledge to develop your own ideas and be able to form arguments, which you can support with historical evidence. You will need to be able to communicate your arguments through extended pieces of writing, which will give you practical skills to continue in further education and take into the workplace.

Who should study this subject?
Students who can work independently by researching information for themselves. It is important that students can put forward different points of view about an event in History and examine both ideas of an issue. It would support students who have a genuine interest in History and may want to continue with it at a higher level.

Is there coursework?

There will be two source based assignments which will look in detail at life for people in Britain during both the First and Second World Wars. All of the coursework will be completed in Year 10. They will also be completed as Controlled Assessments within lesson time.

How will I be assessed?

Paper 1
Source based questions on International Relations in the 20th Century.
Structured question on Causes of WW1, the Peace Treaties and League of Nations in the 1920s and the Causes of WWII. 37.5%

Paper 2
Depth studies on America in the 1920’s and 1930’s and
Vietnam War. 37.5%

Controlled Assessment
Britain and the Home Front during WWI and WWII. 25%
